Parent's Guide to Course Materials
A popular way to save is to purchase used books. Used books sell for at least 25% less than the price of new books. No need to worry about the condition, we select only the best quality for ISU students.
Whenever possible, we offer new and used books to be rented rather than purchased. Renting a textbook is like renting a movie. The student pays a fee at the beginning of the semester, and is asked to return the book at the end of the semester. When a student opts to rent, the due date and rules on its condition are made available. If not met, the student is charged the replacement cost of the book. Students typically save 40% or more off the new book price by renting.
Looseleaf books are just like traditional textbooks but without the binding. They are 3-hole punched for placing in a binder!
Benefits of digital items include portability, continual updates, and additional tools that help you highlight, search or take notes. They can cost up to 50% less than new textbooks. When available, the University Book Store will carry both digital and print.
Other digital content can be viewed via an access code. The content you access depends on the course, but can include things such as practice exam questions, interactive videos to help your student understand course concepts, and course assignments. Access codes are often required as part of the grading system.
Saving students money on textbooks is important to us. We offer competitive prices and a comparison tool in the student book list that shows pricing from Amazon and other online retailers. You will be surprised to see just how competitive the ISU Book Store can be!
WHERE DO WE ACCESS MY STUDENT’S BOOKLIST?
As soon as a student has registered for classes, the book list is available for you on AccessPlus. Just click “View Complete Textbook List” in the class schedule.
HOW DOES MY STUDENT GET THEIR TEXTBOOKS?
The early bird textbook reservation program is a hassle-free way for students to get their books. Once a student has registered for classes, they can place an order through their book list. We pull the books, and the student picks up their box of books when classes start. Hurry! The early bird reservation program is only available for a limited time in the fall and spring semesters.
Our website is open 24/7 for your student to shop for their course materials. Order directly from the student book list and ship it directly to your address. We are so confident in our competitive pricing, your student can even compare textbook pricing with Amazon and other retailers right from the ISU Book Store’s website! Go online to www.isubookstore.com.
The bookstore in the Memorial Union is open 7 days a week to shop for your course materials on your own. Same competitive prices and access to used books and rentals. Not to mention you save 7% every time you shop because the ISU Book Store is tax free! Bring your book list or print it off here - textbooks are organized in alphabetical order by author’s last name.
HOW DO OUR TEXTBOOK PRICES COMPARE TO ONLINE RETAILERS?
When viewing your book list, textbook prices will be listed next to each book. We work hard to provide the best price at the Iowa State University Book Store. If you decide to buy from another online retailer, click the shopping cart by that retailer and continue from their website.
WHAT IS THE REFUND POLICY FOR TEXTBOOKS?
Course materials can be returned for a full refund during the first week of classes each semester. If a student drops a course during the second week of classes, they are also eligible to receive a refund. The items must be in original purchased condition and receipt is required. Be sure to keep your receipts for your textbook expenses throughout the year. You will need this information when completing your taxes.
WHAT DO WE DO WITH BOOKS AT THE END OF THE SEMESTER?
Rental books are due back during finals week. If the condition requirement or due dates are not met, the student will be charged the replacement cost of the book. Other purchased textbooks can be returned at the end of the semester. The ISU Book Store will pay cash for used books, sometimes up to half of the purchase price. Digital books are a student’s to keep, however, many do expire over time.
