The MajorSuccess Program

Iowa State University requires students to have a laptop computer or a device suitable for their major. MajorSuccess is a program developed by the ISU Book Store in collaboration with academic departments across the university. Its purpose is to provide each student with a tailored and accurate technology recommendation based on their chosen major. In addition, MajorSuccess offers valuable insights from a student perspective, along with information on technology savings, essential accessories, service options, and post-graduation benefits.

Architecture, Community & Regional Planning, BPMI, GIS, Industrial Design, Interior Design, and Landscape Architecture departments recommend Windows OS platform because select applications used in these majors may only be available for PCs/Windows OS.

Windows can be run on a Mac using BootCamp or an application like Parallels or VMWare Fusion, but IT support for this will be limited and computer performance may be affected. The newest Apple M1 processor is not currently capable of running BootCamp. If you select an Apple with this processor you will need to utilize the College of Design computer labs to complete some of your classwork.

Some software within the Interior Design program (and possibly others) will require your computer to have a discrete graphics card. These can be found in the Dell XPS 15 and Apple 16-inch MacBook Pro. If you choose a computer without this style of card you will need to utilize the College of Design computer labs. We recommend speaking with your advisor or College IT staff to determine what will work best for your needs.

Graphic Design and some Integrated Studio Arts users tend to prefer Apple’s Mac OS X platform. The Graphic Design Program requires an Apple MacBook Pro laptop in their studios to maximize instruction efficiency and align with industry standards.

    DELL
    Education Pricing:
Cyclones save an extra 10–15% OFF the retail price on Dell computers with education pricing.

4-Year Dell Premium Support Plus Warranty:

Exclusions include fire, theft, complete submergence, Acts of God, intentional damages, etc.

    No Sales Tax:
Save an additional 7% on computers with tax-free purchases. This can translate to savings between $69–$174 for Dell and between $62–$251 on Apple computers—good enough to get a pair of AirPods, AppleCare+ extension, or essential accessories.

    OTHER BRANDS
Cyclones save 7% with no sales tax on tablets or desktops ordered through TechCyte. This also includes components and peripherals like external monitors, SSDs, printers, cables, and accessories.

There are strong arguments on both sides. Some retailers say technology improves over time. TechCyte recommends buying after spring revisions (usually early June) to allow time to get familiar with your new computer, set up required software, and understand accessory needs (adapters, cases, external mouse, etc.). Plus, it’s one less thing when classes start!

We provide our Major Success guide to help narrow your device choices based on your major’s needs. Since each student is unique, we work with you to determine the best fit. If you can’t make it in to the store, call or email anytime, and we’ll help figure it out.

After completing the Core Design Program, undergraduates in a Design major (and Design graduate students) can purchase a laptop through the College of Design. This lets students pay for a laptop per semester and includes design software and tech support. Participation is optional. Click here for more about the Laptop Lease Program.

Windows can run on a Mac via virtualization software like Parallels or VMware Fusion. Parallels is available as a 1-year license through TechCyte.

Every student needs Microsoft Office, which is free for students. Some majors require specific packages—your instructor will inform you once classes start. Many recommended titles are free. Visit IT Software for Students for details.
